Cafe blinds in Cairns built for the wet tropics.

Clear PVC, tinted PVC and insect-mesh cafe blinds that turn a Cairns patio into a year-round room. Marine-grade, UV-stabilised material that survives the build-up, the wet and the salt air off the northern beaches.

Why cafe blinds in Cairns

A patio you can actually use through the wet season.

A Cairns patio without blinds is a fair-weather room. From November to April the afternoon storms blow rain straight across an open deck, and the dry-season southeasterly off Trinity Bay can make an exposed Trinity Beach verandah uncomfortable by mid-afternoon. Cafe blinds close that gap. Drop them when the weather turns and the same patio becomes a sheltered outdoor room you can use three hundred-plus days a year.

We supply and install cafe blinds across Cairns, from the heritage Queenslanders of Edge Hill to the modern alfresco builds of Smithfield and the courtyard homes of Earlville. Every panel is made to measure for your opening, not cut down from a standard size, so the seal against wind-driven rain is genuine.

Material options.

  • Clear PVC (0.5mm to 0.8mm): Keeps the view and the light, blocks wind and rain. Marine-grade, UV-stabilised for tropical sun. The default for a Cairns weather-side drop.
  • Tinted PVC: Same weather protection with a grey or bronze tint that cuts glare and afternoon heat on a west-facing Redlynch deck.
  • Shadecloth mesh: Blocks roughly 90 to 95 percent of UV while letting the breeze through. Ideal where you want airflow more than a full seal.
  • Insect mesh: Fine mesh that keeps midges and mosquitoes off an evening verandah near the mangroves at Trinity Inlet, while still flowing air.

Operation.

The simplest set-up is rope-and-pulley: you roll the blind up and tie it off, and drop it when the weather turns. It is the most affordable option and works well on a sheltered courtyard. For an exposed deck that catches the wet-season wind, a track-guided system such as our Ziptrak outdoor blinds holds the panel on both edges and stays put in a blow. We will recommend the right one for your aspect at the measure.

Worked example.

A typical Earlville rear patio with a 6 metre wide by 2.4 metre high opening, split into three rope-and-pulley drops in 0.8mm clear marine PVC with powder-coated aluminium headboxes, comes in around $2,400 to $3,200 supplied and installed. Swap two of those drops to insect mesh on the breeze side and the figure barely moves. Step up to a fully track-guided system and you are looking at $3,800 to $5,500 for the same opening.

Local know-how

What we get right for Cairns.

Cafe blinds in the Far North are not the same job as cafe blinds in a temperate city. The wet tropics throw three things at them: relentless UV, salt-laden air off the Coral Sea, and the cyclone season. We spec for all three. Stainless or marine-grade fittings rather than mild steel that rusts within a season. Mould-resistant straps and stitching. And honest advice about when a removable rope blind is fine and when you really want a track system that can take a wind load. For a fully sealed, screened room consider our patio enclosures.

We also fit cafe blinds for Cairns cafes, restaurants and pubs along the Esplanade and through the suburbs, where the brief is usually clear PVC that lets patrons keep the view while staying dry during a downpour.

Cafe blinds FAQs.

How much do cafe blinds cost in Cairns in 2026?

Most clear PVC cafe blinds in Cairns run $200 to $360 per square metre supplied and installed, depending on the gauge of the PVC, the mounting hardware and whether you choose rope-and-pulley or zip-track operation. A typical patio with three drops covering a 6 metre by 2.4 metre opening usually lands between $1,800 and $3,400.

Will clear PVC cafe blinds yellow in the Cairns sun?

Cheap PVC will yellow and go brittle within two or three wet seasons in the Far North. We only fit UV-stabilised marine-grade PVC rated for tropical exposure, which holds clarity for eight to ten years on a north or west-facing patio in Edge Hill or Earlville.

Are cafe blinds any good in a Cairns storm?

Rope-and-pulley cafe blinds are designed to be rolled up and secured before a storm, not left down in a blow. For genuine wind resistance during the wet season you want a track-guided system such as Ziptrak, which holds the panel in a channel on both edges.

Can cafe blinds be made with insect mesh for Cairns?

Yes. We supply cafe blinds in clear PVC, tinted PVC, shadecloth mesh and fine insect mesh, and you can mix panels on the same opening. A common Cairns set-up is clear PVC on the weather side and insect mesh on the breeze side so the patio still flows air during the build-up.
